Personal Experience
For a year or more while I had young children I resorted to my old-familiar (and basic) step aerobics while watching Ellen or a guilty-pleasure reality TV show. The step cost very little and slid under a bed while not in use.

Tied to a regular show it becomes a new habit - the show and the exercise go hand in hand. Alternatively you can use ad breaks for more intense exercise.

While you could invest in an exercycle, rowing machine or cross-trainer as you home exercise option - here are 10 easy and low-cost ways to exercise in front of TV
  1. Exercise videos.  A bit obvious but there are lots of free exercise Youtube videos that provide variety.
  2. Step to it.  An aerobic step with simple moves (and balance) 30 mins minimum.
  3. Swiss ball. Even sitting on a swiss ball while watching TV can strengthen your core muscles but there are lots of exercises you can do on the swiss ball too.
  4. Hand weights.  Work strength exercise into your daily routine with hand weights.
  5. Jump rope in the ads march on the spot during the show.
  6. Planks in the ads.  See how many ads you can hold it for.
  7. Walking on the spot. Do an easy v-step with marching arms.
  8. Hula hoop.  It's quiet and can be done for a long period of time.
  9. Sit-ups.  Again a great ad-break activity.
  10. Dance.  Throw music videos on and have a private dance party.
